Four decades of electronic records
Our journey as an Institute to improve health care began in the 1970’s when we developed one of the first Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Systems. So, we have literally been doing this for decades.
Many other innovations in healthcare information technology (HIT) have been developed here at the Regenstrief Institute as well.
Our EHR Clinical Learning Platform is a branch of that original EMR system and comes with over 40 years of experience–in addition to many other great tools to promote learning we’d love to talk with you about. Through our partnerships with Eskenazi Health and IU Health, we are able to provide schools with anonymized real patient records for clinical learning starting on day one.
The EHR Clinical Learning Platform began in 2013 as the Teaching EMR when the American Medical Association (AMA) award Indiana University School of Medicine and Regenstrief faculty investigators one of the first Accelerating Change in Medical Education (ACE) grants to develop our virtual health system using the EMR developed at Regenstrief. Since that time we have formed a collaboration with the AMA to ensure that we are able to grow the platform to serve more Medical and Allied Health Professions programs.
Right now, thousands of students and educators are using our clinical learning platform within their curricula. We are helping to reshape the Medical and Allied Health Professions Education programs of the future, but we can’t do it without you.

University of Idaho, WWAMI Medical Education Program

In the News (Oct 2017): The AMA is behind training a new breed of physicians with innovative solutions like the Regenstrief teaching EHR
In a recent Modern Healthcare article, our teaching EHR platform was discussed. Hear from Dr. Bradley Allen who is leading the effort at the Indiana University School of Medicine and other innovative approaches for changing medical education today from schools like Indiana, NYU, and Penn State. Dr. Bradley states in the article, “Many of the large EHR vendors were reluctant to allow learners access into their EHR prior to them getting to the later stages of their career. We felt it was important to create a platform where they could feel free to experiment with an EHR in a non-threatening manner.” The article highlights how our platform “renames real patient data and allows students to follow treatment through each clinic visit and hospital stay. Students can become familiar with different EHR formats that they will interact with daily and figure out how to use them to coordinate care” to improve medical education for students.
A Little Abstract: Research shows meaningful experiences using EHRs should be part medical school curricula
In the recent Academic Medicine for the Journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the authors discuss their findings on the impact of students not having enough access to EHRs during their medical training. Under the section in the journal article, “Innovative Models to Train Students in EHR Use” our platform was recognized: “Regenstrief Institute in association with Indiana University School of Medicine developed a virtual health care system and the Regenstrief EHR Clinical Learning Platform, a teaching EHR. Students use deidentified and misidentified patient data to practice writing orders, entering notes, reviewing data, and creating a plan of care.”
